Brushing your teeth is one of the most important things you can do for your dental hygiene. Most people know to brush their teeth at least twice a day, but it’s not uncommon for most people to be clueless beyond that. For example, what kind of toothbrush and toothpaste should you be using? For how long? And why is it such a significant part of your oral health? All these things are essential to know to ensure your teeth are as healthy as possible.

Let’s review some important facts to know about brushing your teeth so you can be sure your teeth are kept in excellent health and condition:

  • Teeth-brushing Technique: Brushing your teeth is only as good as your brushing technique, so you’ll want to ensure you’re doing it correctly so you don’t cause any damage. Brush the inner and outer surfaces of your teeth, holding your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle and varying the strokes you use. You’ll want to go back and forth and in circular motions to get all of the debris and plaque off your teeth. You should also go up and down to clean the inside surfaces of your teeth.
  • Teeth-brushing Routine: Once you’ve established a good toothbrushing technique, try to get into a daily routine to keep up with your oral health. Brush at least twice a day, morning and night. Brushing right before bed is best, as your teeth have a higher decay rate at night. Spend at least 2-3 minutes each time you brush to make sure you’re spending a good enough time cleaning all of the surfaces of your teeth.
  • Toothbrush: Whether you use an electric or a regular toothbrush, the most crucial aspect to consider when buying a toothbrush is its bristles. Soft bristles are ideal, as anything too abrasive will cause more harm to your teeth than good. You’ll always want to choose a brush that easily fits into your mouth and can easily reach every part of your mouth so that you can brush every surface of each tooth. Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months or when the bristles are frayed.
  • Toothpaste: The most important part of toothpaste to consider is the presence of fluoride. Choosing toothpaste with fluoride is best, as your teeth will slowly absorb it, making them even stronger and more resistant to tooth decay. Examine these characteristics when looking at different kinds of toothpaste, or ask your dentist for a recommendation.
  • Other Dental Products: If you don’t floss – it’s time to start. Flossing at least once a day will ensure you’re cleaning between your teeth, which is the one area your toothbrush cannot reach. This will remove food particles, tooth decay bacteria, and plaque. You can also use a water pick, mouth wash, and other oral hygiene products in your teeth brushing routine, but make sure you speak to your dentist to figure out what products you need for your teeth.
