Whether you’re eight or 80-years old, your oral health is important. It’s recommended that you see a dentist twice a year, however, sometimes problems pop up between visits. Below you’ll find a few instances you should visit the dentist, even if you do get regular checkups.

  1. You Have Pain: Pain or swelling in the mouth, face, or neck can mean a number of things, and warrants a visit to the dentist.
  2. Your Gums Are Acting Up: If your gums are looking puffy, they’re bleeding when you brush or floss your teeth, or you have a family history of gum disease, it’s time to make an appointment with your local dentist’s office.
  3. You’re Had Work Done: If you’ve had fillings, crowns, dental implants, or dentures, see your dentist regularly to make sure everything is in great shape.
  4. You Have Ongoing Medical Issues: Make your dentist part of your team if you have a medical condition, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, an eating disorder, or are HIV positive. You should also see a dentist if you’re undergoing medical treatments, such as radiation, chemotherapy, or hormone replacement therapy.
  5. You’re Pregnant: It’s safe to go to the dentist while pregnant, and sometimes pregnancy can make dental problems worse, so it’s important to not miss your yearly check-up.
  6. You’re Having Trouble Eating: If you’re having difficulty chewing or swallowing, it’s not normal. Try eating soft or liquefied foods until you can see your dentist.
  7. You Have Dry Mouth: Are you always feeling thirsty? This could be a sign of a medical issue or a medication side effect and can cause dental issues. Contact your dentist to set up an appointment to talk about it.
  8. You Use Any Kind of Tobacco: From bad breath to oral cancer, cigarettes and chewing tobacco are harmful to your overall and dental health. If you’re using any of these products, remember to schedule regular check-ups to keep an eye on your oral health.
  9. You’re Having Jaw Pain: Make an appointment if your jaw sometimes pops or is painful when opening or closing, chewing, or when you first wake up.
  10. You Have Spots or Sores: If there’s something that doesn’t look or feel right in your mouth. Your dentist will examine your mouth and can determine the next steps to take care of it.
